2022.01.23 09:14 vince_ebooks My first shot at the new trial system; would anyone kindly judge me?

Hello everyone! My interest in MTG waxes and wanes every couple of months, and so does the way I identify with the colors. Now that I’m seeing there are tiers to this whole trial thing, I thought I’d try it again. The tier 1 test says I am Selesnya (tertiary red), but a second opinion never hurts. :)
Questions:

  1. Is it better to give everyone equal opportunity, rather than equal wealth?
I guess, by the wording of this question, that giving everyone equal opportunity results in wealth inequality. I would want everyone to have their basic needs met, so I suppose I would go with equal wealth.
  1. Do you think that people are responsible to themselves first and foremost?
I believe that, at a fundamental level, people should have a responsibility to others. While I get that one has a huge influence on how their position in life turns out, we are all here to build each other up. I think everyone should have at least a streak of altruism.
  1. Should we guide ourselves by our feelings, and pursue our wildest dreams?
It’s no good to live your life locking yourself out of your dreams in the name of productivity, obligation, etc. Moderation is important in order to not put your well-being in a precarious position, but in the end you should pursue what you feel is right.
  1. Is it more important to have a better plan than a better execution?
Even the best laid plans mean nothing if not done correctly. To that end, I believe that plans should accommodate for every possibility; that means leaving room for adaptations, confounding variables, and alternative possibilities.
  1. Are we directly responsible for our successes and failures?
I’ve personally lived my life attributing my successes to outside factors -- privilege, luck, etc. -- and my failures as personal responsibilities.
  1. Do our lives have a higher purpose or meaning?
Not necessarily. I don’t believe there is a purpose in terms of spirituality or unlocking some arcane knowledge. I believe our lives are simply meant for experiencing and sensing the pleasures of life, and sharing those experiences with others.
  1. Is human nature, generally speaking, good?
Absolutely. Our ability to cooperate is what has birthed communities and ensured our survival. I remember seeing an essay by Ursula K Le Guin, about how the first tool might not have been a weapon, but a basket, indicating that our nature is not violence, but gathering and sharing. I think about that concept a lot.
  1. Should individuals give up some of their rights and freedoms for safety in society at large?
It depends on the rights and freedoms being given up, and what “safety” means exactly. That being said, I would lean towards yes. As long as those rights and freedoms being given up aren’t ones tied to one’s identity; I would hope people could express themselves and what they believe in as long as it didn’t impose on anyone else’s freedoms.
  1. Is there any point in trying to do more than what's good enough?
Nah. As long as what you’ve done meets standards and your lack of further effort isn’t hampering anyone else’s endeavors, why try harder?
  1. Do you believe that some parts of ourselves are too inherent to ever be changed?
I don’t believe so. I believe anyone can work hard at learning new talents, healing from traumas, and even working through different personalities. (After all, why do you think I like reading and doing these trials so much?)
  1. Do you think we should improve ourselves before improving the world?
Honestly, yes. While I believe it is important to improve the world, one can only do it effectively once one discovers who they are, what they value, and how to play to those strengths.
  1. In our society, is stability more important than advancement?
Yes. Advancement doesn’t mean anything if you or others are at risk. When things are stable at the societal level, that’s when advancement -- both personal, societal, technological, etc. -- can happen.
  1. Do you see passing on your knowledge to others as detrimental to yourself?
No. Gaining knowledge is more often than not an unequivocal improvement to the self, and does not bring anyone down. Again, humans’ ability to communicate ideas to each other is how societies are built, and we can only evolve further from there.
  1. When doing a task, is it more important to have dedication, rather than information?
If I had to pick one, I would rather have the information rather than the dedication. I take tasks at my own pace, so being on-and-off with it doesn’t majorly concern me.
  1. Do you think delayed gratification is worth the wait?
Yes by principle, but I’m personally too indulgent/lazy to care.
16.Which is better, freedom or power?
Freedom, hands down. Power over freedom just gives some people the ability to lord that over others in some way, and that’s just dang annoying.
  1. Do you value expressing yourself to those around you more than you value introspecting and growing as a person?
The end goal is to be able to express yourself to those around you; introspection and growth is simply one of many prerequisites to it. The world deserves to know who you are, what drives you, and what you can leave behind.
  1. Would you prefer living in harmony with the world around you, or free and unconstrained by it?
Ideally, we would have a world with a harmony that allows freedom of expression and identity. But since I’m so conflict-averse, I suppose I would go with the former.
  1. Is benevolence more important than understanding in a good society?
Understanding (of others’ plights, needs, and boundaries) is what leads to benevolence.
  1. Do you think societies that forget about their culture and origins will be unsuccessful?
Yes. It’s not enough to solve problems, but to understand the etiologies and struggles of those who came before, faced those problems.
  1. Do you agree that one of the greatest threats we - society as a whole - must deal with is the rampant individualism that results in people harming one another?
It’s good that the question specified individualism that harms others; I would not say that individualism is a complete plight. That being said, I wouldn’t say it’s the greatest threat we face.
  1. Do you agree that one of the most dangerous pitfalls we face is complacency - thinking that there is a point where further improvement is either impossible or unnecessary?
I think complacency is perfectly fine, at the individual level. While we should strive to help those that are suffering, we should also learn to be present and content with ourselves.
23.Do you agree that one of the easiest ways to end up with an unsuccessful and unhappy life is to be beholden to others - to serve the interests of the group and the community while ending up neglecting your own?
While I believe it does make someone unsuccessful and unhappy, I also believe it is a necessary evil.
  1. Do you agree that one of the worst things that can happen to us is to forget to experience and enjoy life and all it has to offer, instead finding ourselves caught up in the details?
Really, part of experiencing and enjoying life is discovering the details. The big picture can be found in the details. How do we discover human nature? By thinking about our interactions with others and the motives behind them. How do we learn about society? By reflecting on your daily life.
  1. Do you agree that one of the most saddening aspects of the modern world is the overabundance of dishonesty, manipulation and hidden agendas meant to create conflict and disunity?
Yes.
  1. Do you agree that one of the biggest failures of modern-day society is thinking in terms of the group, forgetting that each and every one of us are individuals, unique and with personal ambitions?
No. I don’t believe individuality has to be sacrificed at all in order to be altruistic, compassionate, and humble.
  1. Do you agree that one of the easiest ways to end up with an unfulfilling and unhappy life is to refuse to listen to what your heart and gut tell you?
Yes. Feeling trapped is the worst feeling, and the fastest way to that feeling is not listening to what your heart and gut say, and opening yourself up to regret.
  1. Do you agree that one of the most important concepts people should learn is responsibility - understanding that everyone has a duty to be good to one another?
Absolutely. I certainly don’t think we have a duty to be bad to one another, after all.
  1. Do you agree that members of a society should partake in a collective effort for progress in the long term, even if it means sacrificing the individual’s desires in the short term?
While I’ve been advocating for collectivity, I don’t think one should go as far as sacrificing individual desire in the short term.
  1. Do you agree that power is needed for a successful life, and that the best way to get it is through constant innovation?
Innovation is great; power, not as necessary. It is enough to learn and create.
  1. Is knowledge acquired by directly experiencing the world for yourself, rather than by analyzing it as a puzzle, where each piece fits in a certain spot?
The former. I don’t quite know how to explain myself for this one.
  1. Should relationships with others be built on authentic feelings, or because it's important for everyone to have the right social connections in order to succeed?
Authentic feelings. Pardon me for being overly passionate about this, but I HATE the concept of networking. Forming relationships with the sole purpose of advancing a career, position, etc. just feels…wrong. I want to know peoples’ life stories outside of whatever power race is happening.
  1. Do you prefer having a slow and steady lifestyle, over a fast-paced, innovative one?
Slow and steady. Life’s not going anywhere fast, even if it goes by fast.
  1. Should you focus on taking advantage of the imperfect system that exists, instead of striving for a perfect one that might never exist?
  2. Do you think people become successful in a field because of the discipline they use in channeling their passion, or because of their determination and desire to improve their skills?
  3. Personally, I'd like to be more passionate, even if that meant I was less organized. My mind’s in a lot of places at once, but I can’t seem to get fired up over anything anymore. I’d like for that to change.
  4. Out of these, I want to discover myself the most. Hell, [[Identity Crisis]] should be my commander with how unsure of myself I am sometimes.
  5. Out of these, I don’t want to die forgotten the most. Honestly, I’m only so altruistic and agreeable to people because I don’t want them to forget about me. I want to be important to people, free from criticism. I want to leave behind art that people think about. I feel guilty being this way, but my biggest desire in life is to matter.
  6. People, in general, should try to be more acceptant.
  7. People, in general, should try to be less self-centered.
